For rap listeners, this should open your eyes to think about the lyrics that each artist is rapping from a different perspective. A listener should not take the lyrics as advice to live life in those violent and misogynistic ways, but the listener should learn from the artist’s mistakes and modify their lifestyle in order to live a better life and not to take their situation for granted.
Non listeners are still affected by the social struggles even if they are not listening to the lyrics of rappers like Tupac. Everyone needs to be aware of what situations are occurring in society. As the famed quote goes, “Our country is only as strong as its weakest link”, everyone should be aware of the help needed for the people who are considered the United States’ “weakest link”.
I could use an endless amount of examples within Tupac’s music that creates controversy about how our society needs to focus on the struggles that our country has internally, but that is now up to the reader to explore it more themselves. What I learned throughout this entire experience is that rap music has its positives and negatives, but in the end it is up to the listener to perceive the messages in the lyrics the way they want. Critics may continue condemning rap lyrics to violence, misogyny, and drug use, but even though Tupac is classified as a “gangster”, you can learn a lot through his music and lifestyle by becoming more aware of unfamiliar social struggles in places that crime is high and life is not as fortunate for these people as the majority of the population of the United States.
