Story of an adolescent who listens to rap music
I have a friend named Jordan who will be the valedictorian for his class with a 4.1 GPA. He got a 28 on his ACT, and he has the possibility of coming into college with 15 college credits completed. Jordan is a three sport athlete and a kid who is so moralistic that any parent wishes that he was their kid. Overall, he is the ideal teenager. The point that I am trying to make is that he has been listening to this so called “behavior changing” rap music for six years. That is a third of his life. I asked him what he gets out of rap lyrics (violent and misogynistic). He answered with, “I gain insight on struggles within society. Tupac shows that changes need to happen within poor communities so they don’t continue with this same “circle of hell”. (Spindler, 2012) Ice Cube exploits police persecution on black males, and that these brutalities need to stop in order to end these social wars.” (Spindler, 2012) This is coming from a 17 year old teenager. This is why rap can teaches people about problems people are going through in less fortunate places in the world and how not to live life.
